Learn From The Past, Don’t Replicate It

I've been reading Zero to One by Peter Thiel as I move into the next phase of my Shinecast® business and thought this quote would be a good reminder to share as I began to promote the Ignite Alabama podcast and resource website to Spark Innovation in Alabama. More later. … [Read more...]

Ben Franklin’s One Bad Idea….

Daylight Saving Time. I hate it and I struggle with resetting my body clock, even when I get an "extra" hour in the Fall (the hour that was taken from me in the Spring). I don't really care what time it gets dark. It's the switching back-and-forth twice each year that throw me off my game. I've written about Daylight Saving Time before, but in light of this hilarious spoof on Nacho Punch, I … [Read more...]

UVM Food Systems Summit Public Conference: Storify Recap

Last week I was a part of the University of Vermont's Breakthrough Leaders Program. As part of our VERY intensive week of food systems leadership training, the Breakthrough Leaders attended the UVM Public Conference: "Leading the Necessary [r]Evolution for Sustainable Food Systems: AMPLIFIED" held on Thursday, June 28, 2012 from 1-6 p.m. During the public conference I took as many notes as I … [Read more...]

Warby Parker: Doing Well By Doing Good

I recently ran across this brief news story in the Financial Times about a new company, Warby Parker, which seems to have Ben Franklin's philosophy as part of its core mission. Warby Parker sells affordable, vintage-inspired eyewear. Nothing particularly new there. … [Read more...]

Instead of doing the Wall Street thing and auctioning off the ball to the highest bidder, Lopez returned the ball to Jeter. Way to go, Mr. Lopez. Mr. Lopez apparently has a six-figure student loan obligation. I feel Mr. Lopez's pain (and I'm not 23). But life in pursuit of maximum … [Read more...]

Food, health and the I-want-mine-now mindset

As Poor Richard, Ben Franklin popularized the ancient adage: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." We all know that an apple a day isn't going to prevent all health problems. But the general principle is sound. Fruits and veggies should be at the center of our diets. It surprises me that the importance of a healthy diet doesn't get more respect among policymakers who want to deal with the … [Read more...]

Ignite Birmingham 1: Connecting-the-dots

I am honored to have had the opportunity to participate in the inaugural Ignite Birmingham event held Thursday, April 29, 2010. As I listened to the other talks throughout the evening I began to realize that most of them featured themes or ideas that were compatible with points I planned to touch on in my own talk, also named The Ben Franklin Follies. I thought it might be fun to commemorate the … [Read more...]
